Vertical Stripe Hat

Grey & Black Vertical Stripe Hat
4mm needles
stripe pattern is 8 black and 20 grey (I held the grey behind the black stitches so the black bits are less stretchy and stand out nicely)
decrease is 20 evenly across row on only the grey stripes until only black left
this can be done either flat or in the round
  • cast on 140
  • 2" 2x3 rib in black
  • stocking stitch in pattern for 3"
  • begin decrease, this is row 1
  • continue decrease on rows 6, 11, 16, 21
  • K2tog or P2tog every stitch for next 3 rows
  • run yarn through and pull
This basic hat pattern works well for any coloring or pattern, although if you don't use fair isle technique it is much stretchier so cast on 120 for a ladies size and 140 for the mens.  Bobble is optional.

    Baby Hats

    Baby Hat #1
    knitted in the round
    4mm needles
    cast on 90

    • rib of your choice for the first 10-12 rows depending on what you like (this is just to prevent the hat from stretching too much over time)
    • garter stitch decreasing 12 stitches evenly on rounds 36, 41, 46, 51, 56, and 61
    • after row 63 run the yarn through remaining stitches to cinch up the top
Since this is all garter stitch it is very stretchy.

    Baby Hat #2
    knitted in the round
    4mm needles
    cast on 100

    • rib of your choice for 3/4"
    • pattern rows 1-35
    • decrease 20 stitches evenly on rows 36, 39, 42, 45
    • decrease stiches by half on rows 46-47
    • run yarn through and pull to tighten

This hat can be done with most patterns of stitches.  The yellow one is garter stitch 14 wide, stocking stitch 6 wide and cabled every 10 rows.  But it would also work just garter or stocking or with colorwork.
